Independent rankings for American singles. We compared 24 platforms on safety tools, member quality, U.S. coverage, and pricing — then scored the 10 that are actually worth joining this year.

How Americans actually date online now

A couple together at sunset

Online dating is no longer a niche in the United States. A large share of couples under 40 met through an app or a website, and plenty of people over 50 are on the same products — or on OurTime, which was built so they would not have to be. The question is not whether to try it. The question is which room you walk into.

Swipe apps win on speed. Web-first sites still win on search: faith, kids, distance, education, and “I will not date someone who wants to move to another state.” If you live in New York, Hinge may be enough. If you live outside a dense metro, Match’s filters still do work that a deck of faces cannot.

We built DateRank for that split. Every score on this page is a U.S. score. We do not rank international mail-order products here. We rank the platforms American singles actually open after work.

Best dating sites by goal

There is no single winner for every American. Start with the job you want the app to do.

What we look at before a site makes this list

We start with products that operate legally for U.S. adults, have a real member base in more than one region, and offer basic safety tools: reporting, blocking, and some form of verification or moderation. Vanity apps with no American coverage do not qualify.

Then we score six things: U.S. member depth, profile quality, how easy it is to start a real conversation, pricing honesty, safety features, and whether the product matches its marketing. A site that advertises marriage and delivers a nightclub does not get a 9.

Commercial relationships can affect order and presentation. We say that in the disclosure bar because hiding it would be the fastest way to lose the only asset a comparison site has: the reader finishing the page.

Read the full method, including what we do not test (we do not promise anyone a spouse), on the methodology page.

Guides for American singles

Questions U.S. readers ask first

For most American adults over 30 who want a real relationship, Match is our #1 overall pick because of U.S. coverage and search tools. If you are under 40 in a big city, start with Hinge. If you want marriage-minded matching, choose eharmony.
